The Export Data button allows the user to export data collected on a given iPad. There are four options (listed below) to transfer data files from the iPad to another device. File sharing is the only export option that is activated by default. To activate the other export options, you must first navigate to the Data Security section of the NIH Toolbox app's Settings. Data security settings can be updated at any time.
1. File Sharing: Transfer files from your iPad to a computer.
Mac
- Connect your iPad to your Mac via USB or WiFi syncing (if that is already configured on your devices).
- On your Mac, in the Finder sidebar, select your iPad. Note that if you are running macOS 10.14 or earlier, use iTunes to transfer the files.
- At the top of the Finder window, click "Files".
- Click the triangle beside the app name to see its files.
- Select the file you want to transfer in the list on the right, click "Save to," select where you want to save the file, then click "Save to".
PC
- Install or update to the latest version of iTunes on your PC.
- Connect your iPad to your Windows PC via USB or WiFi syncing (if that is already configured on your devices).
- On your PC, in iTunes, click the iPad button near the top left of the iTunes window.
- Click "File Sharing" and select the app in the list.
- Select the file you want to transfer in the list on the right, click "Save to," select where you want to save the file, then click "Save to".
2. Send via Email
- To use this option, the Mail app on the iPad must be set up. For instructions on setting up the Mail app, please contact Apple Support.
- The Email option will use the Mail app to attach the file(s) to a new email message, which you can send to a destination email.
- When emailing the data files, exercise caution and only email the data to secure email accounts (e.g., the recipient’s institutional email).
- As an extra security measure, you can choose to encrypt the file(s) sent via email with a password you must share with the recipient.
- As a note, it is sometimes helpful to exit the app, open the app you are using to send emails, and navigate to your Sent folder to ensure the files have been sent.
3. Upload to iCloud
- To use this option, iCloud must be set up on the iPad. For instructions on setting up iCloud, please contact Apple Support.
- If iCloud is enabled on the iPad AND in the NIH Toolbox V3 app, all the files generated by this app will be available in the iCloud Drive linked to the Apple ID used to install the app. These files can be accessed by logging into iCloud from any browser using the Apple ID associated with the app that generated the files.
- You can choose to manually backup your data to iCloud, or set up your iPad to automatically backup your data every day (as long as your iPad is charging and connected to WiFi).
4. Upload to Web Server
- This option is intended for use with an existing web location for data centralization. Many research projects have a data coordination center with the capability to set up a data server. For more information, please contact your institution's information technology (IT) personnel.
- Additional information can be found in the attached file, as well as Chapter 2 of the NIH Toolbox V3 Administration Manual or section B.4.4 of the NIH Toolbox V2 App Administrator's Manual.
