In most cases when using the NIH Toolbox app, all you will need to administer the tests is an iPad. However, there are some additional materials needed for the Cognition, Motor, and Sensation tests.
The full list of additional materials and equipment needed for administration can be found in Appendix 2 of the NIH Toolbox V3 Administration Manual and Appendix 5 of the NIH Toolbox V2 Administrator's Manual. Aside from Home Base and the secondary app for the Standing Balance test, the same materials and equipment can be used in V2 and V3.
Keep in mind the following guidelines when purchasing additional materials:
- Unless recommended otherwise, all materials and equipment can be purchased from any vendor of your choosing.
- Adhere to the minimum requirements for the materials and equipment where applicable.
- Some materials and equipment can be reused for multiple tests (e.g., Bluetooth wireless keyboard).
- Vendors may provide discounts for educational institutions, non-profits, etc.
Since the NIH Toolbox V2 release 1.22, as a secondary device for Standing Balance Test administration we support iPhones that can run the currently available iOS version. Support of the iPod 7th Gen was be discontinued in Fall ’22 when iOS 16 was released.
