After setting up the eight-digit passcode in the public version of the NIH Toolbox V3 app, a screen will present the subscription options. The NIH Toolbox V3 app is free to download and explore but using the app in its entirety requires a paid subscription.
- Limited Free Trial: Prior to subscribing, you may explore the app via the Limited Free Trial, which allows access to the tests, batteries, participants, and test administration. This will give you the opportunity to get comfortable using the NIH Toolbox V3 app and explore what it has to offer. However, while using the Limited Free Trial, no data will be saved and you will not have access to the reports or data exports. To begin collecting data you must first subscribe to the app. To view tests in the Cognition domain, you must first enter a Cognition access code, which users can request for free at NIHToolbox.org.
- Paid Subscriptions: Each paid subscription grants 12-months of full access to the NIH Toolbox V3 app, though users must first request free access to the Cognition tests at NIHToolbox.org. Each 12-month subscription will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current subscription period. No cancellation of the current (paid) subscription is allowed during the subscription period. After expiration, you will still have access to existing data on the iPad, but you will no longer be able to create new participants or collect new data. NIH Toolbox V3 subscriptions are linked to specific iPads, but can be deactivated on one device and activated on another, if needed.
- It is possible to upgrade your subscription to cover additional devices. Doing this stops the current subscription immediately and refunds the remainder of the period, while simultaneously initiating a new subscription for additional devices.
- We do not currently support immediate downgrades (e.g., moving from a 10-device subscription to a 6-device subscription immediately). On the Settings screen, tap the “Manage Subscription” link. This will take you to Apple’s App store Manage Subscriptions area. Unlike upgrade, the original subscription continues until its expiration date. After that, the renewal will be for the new subscription for fewer devices. Alternatively, you can turn off the automatic subscription renewal and when the current subscription expires, you can purchase a subscription for the number of devices you would like.
- Due to Apple's constraints the NIH Toolbox app must be downloaded directly from the Apple App store. The app will not recognize a subscription that was purchased if it was downloaded from a Device Management system.
An NIH Toolbox V3 subscription is $600 for access on up to 2 devices, $1,500 for access on 3-6 devices, and $2,500 for access on 7-10 devices.
Users with more than 10 iPads should create a unique Apple ID for each batch of 10 devices. That is, one Apple ID would be used for devices 1-10, a second Apple ID would be used for devices 11-20, a third Apple ID would be used for devices 21-30, and so on.
Please note that custom batteries, participants, assessments, collected data, and settings do not move from one device to another. You will still be able to view and export data on an iPad without an active subscription, but you will not be able to collect new data (unless you reactivate a subscription on that device).
Please note that the Apple ID that purchases the NIH Toolbox subscription should remain signed in on your iPad; logging out or changing the Apple ID on your device may cause issues with the NIH Toolbox app.
